AEO GUIDE

What is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)?

June 29, 20265 min read

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the discipline of structuring and optimizing your website's content so that it is selected, referenced, and cited by AI-driven answer engines such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, Anthropic's Claude, Google's Gemini, and Perplexity AI.

Unlike traditional SEO, which optimizes web pages to rank in a list of blue links, AEO optimizes content to be synthesized directly in the conversational answers generated by Large Language Models (LLMs).

Why is AEO Critical Today?

As search behaviors shift from keyword queries to natural language questions, users are bypassing traditional search engine results pages (SERPs). If your brand is not mentioned or cited in the direct answers generated by AI assistants, you lose visibility at the very beginning of the buyer's journey.

How Answer Engines Choose Sources

To generate accurate responses, modern AI search tools use Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) to search the web in real-time. They prioritize sources that meet the following criteria:

1. Clear, Factual Structure: Direct, simple explanations of concepts.

2. Entity Semantic Proximity: Well-defined associations between your brand name and its core attributes (e.g., "fast database", "cheap CRM").

3. Structured Schemas: Pages containing clean JSON-LD metadata that machine crawlers can parse without ambiguity.

4. Citation Trust: High consensus and crawlable mentions across developer docs, technical articles, and public reviews.

To win in the age of AI search, companies must optimize their content for machine readability first, ensuring LLMs can ingest and trust their brand's data.
